MIDWOOD TENNIS
ACADEMY STAFF
Midwood Tennis Academy staff is comprised of career tennis professionals
and players. All staff members have completed background checks and are certified and insured through The United States
Professional Tennis Association. Additional summer staff is made up of teachers from local CMS schools, many of whom
have masters degrees in education.

MTA Founder, Tom Edsall, has been teaching
tennis for more than 15 years. He has been an instructor all across the country and has studied under more than 25 USPTA
certified professionals including 2 USPTA Master Professionals - there are only about 100 in the United States!
He has taught in Michigan, California, Georgia, Illinois, Colorado and now here in North Carolina. He has worked with
the USTA Area Training Centers, Nike Tennis Camps and the West Michigan Tennis Academy. Tom played tennis for and graduated from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan in 1995 with an honors
degree in accounting. Tom is a certified tennis prefessional through the United States Professional Tennis Association.
He is certified in CPR and first aid. Tom works closely with The Charlotte Tennis Association, Mecklenburg County
Park and Recreation and several local schools. Tom is married to Claire Edsall, a first grade teacher at Dilworth Elementary
School.

Ben Wolfe
has been in Charlotte for the past 2 ½ years and is a teacher at Mallard Creek High School where he coaches the boys
and girls varsity tennis teams. Ben has just completed his first year teaching with Midwood Tennis Academy.
Before that, Ben taught tennis at River Run Country Club in Davidson. Ben’s tennis teaching
experience started in Lansing, Michigan where he coached varsity tennis and ran high school camps at East Lansing High School.
He was also an Assistant Director of Nike Summer Tennis Camps at Michigan State University, where he also helped out
with Michigan State’s Division I women’s varsity tennis team. Ben has travelled the world and
even spent 2 years teaching at Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Andy
Michael has been teaching with Midwood Tennis Academy for the past 3 years. Andy played on the
ATP Futures Tour and competed in numerous Challenger Level events between 2003 and 2005 before coming to Charlotte.
Andy attended DePaul University in Chicago where he was a three-year captain and the team MVP in 2003.
While at DePaul, Andy achieved a National Collegiate Division I Rank of Top 100 in singles and Top 50 in doubles.
He was also the recipient of the Division I National Student Athlete Leadership Award. In his earlier
days, Andy was routinely ranked as one of the top 30 junior players in the nation for several consecutive years.
After his professional playing career and before coming to Charlotte, Andy worked at The Chicago Board of Trade and
taught part-time at Chicago’s famous East Bank Club. Andy now works for Bank of America, is a member
of the Charlotte Pro League, and he and his wife Bethany are awaiting the arrival of their first child.
